The Challenge: Metal Roofs and Gutter Placement
Installing gutters on metal roofs involves unique challenges. You must follow specific guidelines to ensure the gutters remain intact over time. One significant challenge is the limited space available for proper grading.
As you can see in the attached photos from a recent installation, the proximity of the metal roof leaves very little room to grade gutters toward the downspout. If we pitch them too steeply, the gutter drops completely below the fascia board. This poses a dilemma. Raising the gutter flush with the roof provides sufficient space for drainage, but it comes with a downside. Heavy snowfall can pull down high gutters and compromise their structural integrity.
A Proven Solution: Snow Break Systems
To address this challenge, we install a snow break system. We position these a couple of feet above the gutter line. This system effectively retains the majority of snow on the roof. The snow then melts gradually into the gutter. With this solution in place, we can safely raise the gutter and ensure proper drainage.

- Sloping Guidelines: Ideally, slope your gutters down toward the downspouts at a rate of 1 inch per 16 feet. If this looks off visually, a slight pitch of 1⁄2 inch per 20 feet still ensures effective drainage.
- Placement: Position the front lip of the gutters right below the projected roof plane. This stops sliding snow from tearing them off while still catching rainwater. This ideal distance ranges from 3⁄4 inch to 1⁄4 inch depending on your roof pitch.
- Front Lip Height: Keep the front lip of the gutter approximately 1 inch lower than the back wall. This safety design forces extreme water overflows outward, protecting your fascia board and siding from rot.
